Main line running while nice takes focus and time away from what is the core business of running the SVR. It would be interesting to see figures on the additional costs and wear and tear for mainline vs the additional profit made.

Having a mainline certified loco could open up the idea of specials originating from the SVR without having to import a NR certified loco as such. I suppose it depend how much mainline exposure a loco gets. Being a service fleet loco most of the time, plus "some" mainline work could be a good compromise.

As an aside, I have noticed an increasing trend for long-distance steam trips on NR, with the attendent early starts and late finishes, which might not be to everyone's taste, so having a NR-certified loco on the SVR could open up the possibility of steam haulage for just a "reasonable" day out, ie keep both the cost and the duration to a more modest basis. ( just off the top, Stratford, Chester, Salop, Lincoln, York,? ) You dont have to go hundreds of miles and set off at the crack of dawn, or even earlier!

That's one thing that annoys me. I just can't get to most steam charters, as they tend to start in the bloody capital at silly o'clock in the morning! Having a base for mainline operations in the midlands would be a very shrewd move. It would open up the market for those that can't afford to get digs in london for an early start & late return.

There is indeed TYS, but hopefully the market would support two complimentary operations, rather than being in competition as such, particularly as Vintage Trains also appear to go in for the more modest distance/reasonable cost outings.
I was perhaps supposing that mainline outings originating at say Bewdley with the Black 5 would be on an occasional basis rather than regular.
There should then hopefully be room for both TYS trains and those off the SVR.

All this sounds rather like a heart over brain return to the 80s...

But....the report was that someone is prepared to put up some overhaul sponsorship money, so maybe mainline certification would be "a price worth paying"?

As a matter of interest do we know if Phil Swallow is to have "Taw Valley" NR certified, or just for use on the SVR?

I believe Taw Valley is being overhauled to main line standards but for heritage line use only.

Regarding 45110, well, that's for others to decide. But let's not get carried away.

An interesting twist on this theme at https://www.national-preservation.com/threads/severn-valley-railway-to-launch-%C2%A34-000-000-share-issue.33047/page-43

Food for thought.

There seems to be a theme of 2+2=6 to this thread. Certifying a loco for the main line is one thing - interpolating that to SVR is going to go mainline is a bit of a step.

It has been mentioned our heritage sets would be a draw. Well they might but I dont think we would get exemption for wooden bodied stock on the main line. One offs on isolated branches by the railmotor are one thing, a 10 coach rake is another. However I have no doubt our MK1s could be used as INMHO they are in better condition than the WCR set which I had the pleasure of conducting. However we cant afford to loose the use of a set even on light timetables. Our sets are maintained in good order by regular visits of the spare set to the maintenance road in the shed.

It must also be remembered that MK1 and " stock has to be deroated for some modern standards.

Black 5 No. 45110 will be moved onto The Engine House's car park for display throughout July and August, as well as its starring role at our Last Days of Steam event alongside 8F No. 48773.

My daily "old photos" posting takes up much of my spare time and other photos don't get posted, but I have managed to add 10 photos, 7 of which show 45110 today. The blog post is OK for mobiles but if you want to view them on a PC there is a link to the gallery.
