Class 50 Golden Jubilee
October 4th - 6th

We celebrate 50 years of the Class 50 diesel-electric locomotive.

The British Rail Class 50 was a class of 50 diesel locomotives designed to haul express passenger trains at 100mph. Built by English Electric at the Vulcan Foundry in Newton-le-Willows between 1967 and 1968, the Class 50's were initially on a 10-year lease from English Electric Leasing, and were employed hauling express passenger trains on the, then non-electrified, section of the West Coast Main Line between Crewe and Scotland.

Alongside our own Class 50s, there will be a number of visiting Class 50s too, for three days of 'Hoover' action!

Class 50s attending:
50007 Hercules. With thanks to the Class 50 Alliance
50008 Thunderer. With thanks to Garcia Hanson
50017 Royal Oak. With thanks to Neil Boden
50026 Indomitable (subject to completion of engine repairs). With thanks to Paul Spracklen
50031 Hood. With thanks to the Class 50 Alliance
50033 Glorious (subject to completion of overhaul). With thanks to The Class 50 Alliance
50035 Ark Royal. With thanks to Class 50 Alliance
50044 Exeter (subject to completion of engine repairs). With thanks to the Class 50 Alliance
50049 Defiance. With thanks to the Class 50 Alliance
50050 Fearless. With thanks to Neil Boden

Attractions include:
    • Intensive operation of Class 50 hauled services on Thursday, Friday and Saturday, with local services between Kidderminster and Bewdley too.
    • We'll attempt to host the largest operational gathering of one loco type ever staged in preservation (steam or diesel). We need to have 10 working locos to achieve this...
    • Kidderminster Diesel Depot on Friday and Saturday.
    • Commemorative merchandise
    • Thursday evening social at Kidderminster Station.
    • Class 50 hauled ballast trains.
•Display of Class 50 models, memorabilia, sales stands and lots more.

More information to follow.

Not stated on the website but it is assumed all locomotives and attractions are subject to availability and may be subject to change, even at short notice?

This forum post is a snapshot extract from the main SVR web site and is not necessarily updated to reflect change. Always refer back to and check the main web site to confirm details are still correct.

Wow what a line 11 engines. Shame we can't do what East Lancs did with the Teddy Bears and put them on same train.

50026

We are very sorry to announce that following the discovery of issues with the power unit after a startup this morning, 50026 will be unable to take part in the Class 50 Gala. The loco will be on static display during the event whenever this is possible.

50017, 50050, 50049 and 50007 passing through The Hawthorns today.

https://youtu.be/kdiw3QCf3P8

They missed out the stop in Rowley loop which spoiled my plans to film them a second time.

Thanks. I've started editing videos from Thursday but it takes a while to do. Uploading an eleven minute video is taking about 4 hours - obviously not a fast connection, made worse by filming in 4K.

Well, I had a really good day out. What a splendid gala and it was wonderful to see so many of the same type of locomotive. It is a gold star from me to the Severn Valley Railway for making it all happen.

RTT shows buses not trains at Walsall, so maybe that route closed and so just reversing at Tyseley?

50008 and 15 sneaked out today without me knowing. I did check last night, but no times showing, they were away to Butterley just after 10 am today. Then on to the Nene Valley.

The general feedback on the diesel focussed social media has been universally positive about the railway, the staff, the locos, and the event overall.

Over the three days I met two expats who had come back to the UK to participate, as well as two gentlemen from Holland, two from Germany and one from the USA.

I understand from informed, but unofficial, sources that in broad terms the ticket sales were more than expected and that food sales at Kidderminster were four times higher than had been anticipated.

It looks like this event has hit all the right buttons with the enthusiasts. Well done to all involved in the planning and execution of the event.
