I know it is only 25th August but I noticed there is no Christmas 2018 thread. I mention it because the SVR Festive leaflet is on the website https://www.svr.co.uk/pdf/Brochures/SVR%20Christmas%202018%20v2.pdf

The Santa Sleigh Express compartments were sold out within a matter of days.

Has anyone else picked up on the disgraceful fares being charge for the Santa specials for 2018.

There is no discount for children at all this year (think there has always been a discount for children) and even infants under 1 years old must pay 7.50 and they don't even take up a seat ( oh they get a present whoopee.....as if they realise what is going on).How can the SVR justify charging an infant this amount of money.....it just seems pure greed in order to pay wages for the multitude of paid staff on the railway.....

Some people will always pay as children will always want to ride on Santas but infants ??????? as usual the fares increase each weekend getting higher as you near Christmas

we all know passenger numbers are down this year but coming on top of abolishing senior citizens discount this year which must have reduced the numbers travelling outside school holidays what happens if Christmas fares deter people from travelling.....just a thought

anyone else prepared to comment or do we just shrug it off

20 for 22nd and 23rd is OK I don't think there has ever been a child discount, though the booking fee is excessive.

I disagree on the highlighted point, often the parents bring a carrycot for the little one and thus can take up a fair bit of space, sometimes more than 3-5 year olds. Previously the passengers numbers haven't counted babies as they don't pay. But they still take up space and if you have quite a lot over the course of a train, you lose a surprising number of seats.

I don't agree with charging under 1's, just a option to register that there will be under 1's with that group would help gauge a better idea of true passenger numbers.

It sounds to me as though there have been complaints. The wording is typically cack handed.

At https://www.svr.co.uk/SEItem.aspx?a=55

It says both this:

"{blah blah}. *Fare-paying babies under 12 months will receive a present, but MUST NOT take up a seat."

and this:

"Conditions of Use
1 {blardy blah}. Babies under 12 months without tickets must not take up a seat on the train."

So there is to be no seat for any baby, fare paying or not (carry-cot or not)?

It would make more sense to me to say no ticket no seat, baby rate for a seat, child rate for seat and present. But that would also be wrong for someone.

The rules are no different from previous years. We have never given discounts for children at Christmas -- nor do the vast majority of railways; we do a detailed survey of what other railways offer, and charge, so we know this is the case.

As far as babies under 1 is concerned, we give them a present which has a retail value of what they pay, so effectively they don't pay for the journey. We only have a certain number of seats, so to avoid over-crowding, they mustn't occupy one.

One new feature is that the maximum number of people booked on each train is 30 less in the afternoon than in the morning, so people returning later on should be able to get a seat. This is impossible to predict with any accuracy, as people can return on any train; many stay at Arley for quite some time, and also a fair number break their journey at Bewdley.

I have reservations about booking fees in some cases, but we are charged per transaction by the company issuing the tickets [this is a different system this year for Santa].

We have a spread of fares across the 4 weekends, with the first one being 5 cheaper in the hope that we will actually sell out the first weekend. If all fares were the same, everyone would go for the last weekend, so we need to sell earlier weekends before they happen [obviously].

Sales so far are quite good, with most people going for the later weekends. If you think 20 is expensive, don't forget that the Great Central charge 25 for their Santa DeLuxe for the last weekend, and this always appears to sell out before their cheaper offerings!
