The Cavell Van

To commemorate the 100th anniversary of World War I, we will be welcoming the Cavell Van to Arley from May 26th to July 8th.

Part of the commemorations to mark the centenary of the end of World War I, and a key feature of this year’s Step Back to the 1940s Weekends in June and July, the van has played a poignant role in Britain’s history. In 1919, it was used to bring back the body of nurse Edith Cavell from Belgium where she had helped 200 Prisoners of War escape, before she was caught and executed. The following year, the same wagon transported the body of the ‘Unknown Warrior’ prior to a funeral at Westminster Abbey, representing the many who died without being identified.

To mark the 100th anniversary of the end of World War I, you can visit the historically significant Edith Cavell Van at Arley.

The vehicle will arrive on Friday 25th May, by road, where a short ceremony will take place at Kidderminster Station.

Following its movement to Arley by rail, the vehicle will be open for visits every weekend (May 26-28, June 2, 3, 9, 10, 16, 17, 23, 24 & 30, July 1, 7 & Cool and on selected weekdays in June from 11am to 4pm.

Our grateful thanks to the Kent & East Sussex Railway and Worcestershire County Council for the hire of this vehicle.
