Severn Valley Railway Official Site [Facebook]

Who's up for another Autumn Steam Gala announcement?

We're thrilled to announce our third visiting locomotive for the event, in the shape of Black 5 No. 45231 Sherwood Forester - which has never visted us before.

The locomotive will be on the Railway from mid-July to the end of September, taking a starring role in the September 20th - 23rd event, as well as our Last Days of Steam Celebrations in August.

Look out for more annoumcements soon...

A very sensible addition to the operating fleet over the high season.

Does however show that we are not over-blessed with suitable steam motive power this year.

Excellent addition indeed and also a great addition to the ASG line up. Been far too long since a Black 5 last operated on the SVR!

Do I remember correctly reading somewhere that this loco was scheduled to run in the 15 guinea special, but failed, and was replaced by 45110 at the last minute. Can anyone confirm ?

no - it was 45305 that was originally rostered for the train, not 45231.

To enlarge on this, 5305 was diagrammed to run the first and final legs, Manchester - Liverpool and returned, but failed with a fallen brick arch. 5110 was the replacement.

That is also why in all the pictures of 45110 on the special the 1T57 reporting number is where the front smokebox door plate should have been. It had been removed and so as a last minute replacement it would have not looked good to have a locomotive without a front number

The Sugar Loaf Mountaineer on 7 July has been cancelled due to fire risk and rescheduled for Sunday 23 September which is the last day of the ASG. Pathfinder's website is still showing 45231 as the loco to be used.

May I ask what is the current knowledge about 45231 arriving on the Railway? I seem to recall the loco was due to appear at about this time in July?
Thank you.

Are you saying that 45110 ran without a front numberplate? If yes, then you are wrong.

Sorry, mate, but the number was painted directly on to the smokebox door, as photos show, but you need to look very carefully.

Thanks for the clarification. On August 11th I took a photo of the loco at Lostock Hall station when it was coming onto shed for servicing. You would not know it was not fitted with a numberplate.
